Last Sunday morning my wife Stephanie and I decided to take our kids to Coronation Park for the Oakville Children’s Festival. No Xbox, no iphones, no TV and NO video games.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I find the last few weeks in July and first few weeks of August to be the ‘dog days of summer’ where the kids are bored and nothing seems to entertain them. That’s why I thought the timing of the Children’s festival was perfect, a great excuse to get out, have some fun and burn off some of that stored up energy the kids have.
If you haven’t been to Coronation park in Oakville, I suggest that you check it out some time. It’s a beautiful spot situated on the Oakville Lakeshore just east of Third Line. There are places to picnic, a playground, a splash pad and walking trails with excellent views of the water.
Coronation park reminds me a lot of Jack Darling Park in Mississauga, a great place for hosting large outings by the lake. The Event was a good size and consisted of childrens entertainment, face painting, balloons and number of booths set up by local businesses and groups from the community. The Fire department was on hand with their historic truck and the hydro company was giving rides in their crane truck.
There were also a number of food trucks at the event serving up a host of tasty dishes to try.
What I liked about the event the most was that unlike going to the CNE or other theme parks, people were free to partake in the events, visit the vendors or just hang around and enjoy the park.
My 2 older boys had a great time cooling off at the splash pad and throwing rocks into Lake Ontario.
We all had a great time at the Oakville Children’s festival last weekend at Coronation Park. It was a beautiful day and everyone had a blast. Good job Town of Oakville!
