Yesterday morning we packed the kids up and headed to the Winter Farmers Market at Terra Garden Centre in Milton. I love going to farmers markets because I like the idea of supporting local businesses and I believe that local food is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle.
First I would like to say ‘kudos’ on Terra for coming up with this idea. The green house is a perfect (and warm) place to host the market and with green surroundings it gets you in the mood to shop natural. There was about 40 vendors there with many interesting products including meat, produce, and specialty items. The only thing to keep in mind if you do go is that you won’t see a whole lot of fruits and vegetables (because it’s winter) however there’s plenty of other food groups to choose from.
Check out my Farmers Market Guide for a list of warm weather farmers markets in Mississauga.
On our travels we came across a bakery stand that was very interesting. Located in Hamilton, Cake and Loaf Bakery is a ‘from scratch bakery’ specializing in using organic and local ingredients. I tried a few samples of bread and it was really good.
After filling up on bread I tried my hand at smoked salmon. My favourite was the smoked salmon bacon, if you haven’t tried salmon bacon before you’ve got too!
Another interesting vendor I spoke to was Sabores Latinos located in Burlington. They had an assortment of salsa’s, dips and latin food. Stephanie and I both loved the Chilean Pebre Picante, we bought a jar and I can’t wait to try it on a steak! They also make gluten free, GMO free frozen meals such as cassadillas, and tomales.
Another vendor that really intrigues me was the Kettle Corn Boss. They seill as you can guess- kettle corn, but they also had gluten free nachos made out of asparagus flour. I bought a bag and I have to say that they were amazing and super addicting!
Although I didn’t get a picture, I stopped by the Snowden Farms stand to learn more about natural Beef. With all the issues over processed meat in the past few years, it’s nice to see local farms producing hormone free, naturally raised beef. They had meat and also made gluten free meat pies which I thought looked delicious.
Dinnerlicious is a meal service catering to busy, health conscious people who can’t seem to find the time to pull together a meal from scratch (story of our life!). You simply go on their website and order the meals you want and they deliver it to you. The lady I spoke with said they do deliver to Mississauga, so we will be trying it out this week. I’ll let you know how it goes.
Aside from Stephanie and I getting our fill on free samples, the kids had a fun time too.
We all had a great time visiting the Winter Farmer’s Market at Terra garden Centre in Milton. If you’re in to natural food and are looking for something new, it’s worth it to check it out!
